“Burning Down The House” became a global hit for the Talking Heads in 1983, partially due to its identifiable vocal texture and that funky sound— primitive and persistent–repeated like a slogan, over and over, simultaneously exciting and lulling.

“The Man,” by Las Vegas rockers The Killers, has that same funky sound and vocal texture, plus lyrics that make much more sense than “Burning Down The House” ever did.

I got gas in the tank
I got money in the bank
I got news for you baby, you’re looking at the man

I’m the man, I’m the man
Who’s the man with the plan?

Lead singer Brandon Flowers describes the track as “… funkier than we’ve ever done before.”

“The Man” is about a small-time talent trying to make it big in Las Vegas. The video is way-cool with with nods of recognition to Americana icons like Elvis (gold glitter jacket), cowboys (think John Travolta in  “Urban Cowboy”), motorcycle stunts (think Evel Knievel),  and upward mobility.

“Boomer Music Update” conclusion:  A “Must Listen To” if a band named “The Killers” turns you on (think black leather motorcycle jackets) and an “Almost Must Listen To” to for everybody else.

The Killers have a following, and they’ve been waiting five-years for some new music. Though no release is set for their next, fifth album –“Wonderful Wonderful” — “The Man” is a delicious sneak preview.

It’s currently Top 10 on Alternative radio and has the momentum to go much higher.

As we speak, The Killers are performing overseas, returning to the U.S. in Aug. to headline Chicago’s huge, 3-day “Lollapalooza” festival.
