Her debut single, “My Church,” captivates from its first few notes, and then it just keeps building with her vocals pulling every bit of emotion from each cleverly written line.
The “Church” in the title is what it feels like to her when she drives the L.A. freeways, at night, windows open, music blasting, an experience that authors and songwriters have written about for years. This is Maren’s contribution to the genre.
“My Church” brings to mind Loretta Lynn: clear vocals, lazy vowels, how to deliver a punch line. Both women reveal their vulnerabilities and their inner strengths in a blues-y, plaintive style.
