2014’s earworm of the year was from “Rude,” a song performed by Magic, a Canadian group with a reggae pop sound. The song was everywhere: on the radio, at the mall, in the grocery store. It skyrocketed to #1, and still gets plenty of exposure.
Will “Magic” strike the pop charts again?” The band’s new release, ““Red Dress,” is just out, with their signature reggae fusion sound, meaning it’s delightful, light, playful, and joyful. The lyrics are straight forward and charming.
She’s tried on everything
Every little thing inside her closet
But I’ve been on my best behaviour
Pacing back and forth
And 10 thousand lifetimes later
When she walks through the door
…he goes nuts over her red dress! All he can think is:
“I gotta find a way to take it off.”
This is a feel good song-it’s not “nasty” lusty; rather, it’s cute and lovely.
Maybe the word “red” is lucky?
It worked some magic in 1984 for UB40, who, like Magic, also had a unique pop reggae sound. Their “red” was a cover of Neil Diamond’s “Red Red Wine” (from 1967).
About the band: From Toronto. Four men, all in their 30s.
