I’m a Boomer who loves music—how come I’ve never heard of Gavin DeGraw? His new song Is. Just. Great. Fun and bouncy, sophisticated and smart. “She Sets The City On Fire” is currently one of the 20 most played songs on Adult Top 40 radio.
The story is timeless: a handsome, hip guy falling hard for a gorgeous girl.
When I listened to it, I disregarded that the men in my circle no longer look that hip or that handsome, and that the women aren’t that gorgeous, either. Instead, I appreciated how much fun it once was to be that young, that hip, and that hot.
Gavin De Grew is a 39-year old singer/songwriter from upstate New York, who’s been around since 2002, covering vocals, piano, keyboards, and guitar, playing blue-eyed soul, pop, and pop/rock.
Signed by industry honcho Clive Davis, DeGraw’s debut album soon followed; one year later, the TV show “One Tree Hill” helped propel “I Don’t Want To Be” into the top ten.
By 2014 he had enough winners to release a “Greatest Hits” album.
Early last month he delivered his sixth album and its first single is the above-mentioned “She Sets The City On Fire” which calls to mind a hit from 1983: “Hot Girls In Love” by Canadian pop-rock quintet Loverboy, which also sent off a lot of heat using that same scenario: handsome, hip guy flips for gorgeous young girl.
Everybody–all generations—can relate to young love: either you are in it, past it, or anticipate it. Listening to this song made me feel ageless, confirming that old saying, that age is just a state of mind.
