“Life Goes On” by Fergie is out of my format comfort zone, but I listened with an open ear and mind, because the awareness of new, quality, popular music, some of which l love and some not so much, connects me to what’s happening in the culture at large– regardless of format.
Fergie’s sound on “Life Goes On” is R&B infused pop, with echoes of “I Can’t Wait,” from mid-80’s one hit wonder Nu Shooz—a song with a very “80s” vibe and style and a fun and outdated video to match.
Fergie’s lyrics are sometimes literal and easy to understand, and other time she communicates via a collection of free-association sounds and words.
The sentiments cover a wide range of issues: love, time, and work/life balance. The chorus Is low key and indifferent:
Life goes on with or without you
It’s up to you what you’re gonna do
You could go or you could stay
Who cares anyway?
Fergie’s had a string of hit songs both solo and alongside Will.I.am and The Black Eyed Peas, and she’s just now releasing her second solo album, “Double Duchess” a follow up her 2006 solo debut.
“Life Goes On” is making inroads on Adult Top 40 radio stations.
