The Avett Brothers sang George Harrison’s “Give Me Love (Give Me Peace On Earth)” on “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert” last week, with such passion and good will it was like listening to the 60s and 70s all over again.

Spirituality was at the very core of George Harrison and it was reflected in his music:  “My Sweet Lord” was his first #1 as a solo artist and “Give Me Love (Give Me Peace On Earth)” also reached #1.

We can only speculate as to what Harrison’s reaction would be, had he watched The Avett Brothers’ perform. When he wrote this song, back in the pre-digital, non-globalized era, the Millennials hadn’t even been born, yet, here we are 40+ years lager, and the message is still relevant: Peace, love and understanding is still an option.

The Avett Brothers are an American folk-rock band from North Carolina, started in the late 90s by two real-life brothers, Scott and Seth Avett.

Their music combines bluegrass, country, punk, pop melodies, folk, rock and roll, indie rock, honky tonk, and ragtime to produce a novel sound described by the San Francisco Chronicle as having the “heavy sadness of Townes Van Zandt, the light pop concision of Buddy Holly, the tuneful jangle of the Beatles, the raw energy of the Ramones.”
