Katy Perry’s last album came out in 2013, and her world-wide fan base, eagerly awaiting a followup, has had to make due with “Rise,” which got radio air play and was also the theme song to last summer’s Rio Olympics.
Now she’s released another single, “Chained To The Rhythm” a new production that, within days of its release, is nearing Top 10 in radio airplay on both Top 40 and Adult Top 40 formats.
Depending on who interprets an artist’s intention, when it comes to song lyrics the underlying theme of Ms. Perry’s newest observes that all of us are caught in life’s motions–the daily routines of life:
“stumbling around like a wasted zombie.”
“Chained to the Rhythm” was written by Max Martin and singer-songwriter Sia, who’s work veers into performance art; it features a guest vocal by Skip Marley, reggae legend Bob Marley’s grandson.
The tone and melody are happy-go-lucky, like Madonna’s disco infused, light hearted “Into the Groove” from the 1985 movie “Desperately Seeking Susan.”
Both songs are dance tracks; it’s the lyrics that differ. “Into the Groove” is about getting lost in the music, while “Chained to the Rhythm” delivers a more serious message.
Is this a glimpse into the long awaited 4th Katy Perry album, set to come out this year?
