When listening to Old Dominion, it’s best to toss aside preconceived notions of Country music—that way you can more readily “get” that this band, which is one of Nashville’s hottest hit makers, is not a traditional band, rather, it’s five super-successful songwriters whose day jobs are writing hits for A-list singers.
In 2015 they took a shot at singing their own songs, and it worked. Since then, they’ve had several #1 hits; currently, they own the #2 slot on the Country chart.
Their next single, “Be With Me,” is so…unexpected. It’s got a modern country-pop sound but the content is what surprises: diversity and female empowerment. A turbo charged “You Go Girl” video that is charming and refreshing, moving and uplifting. Lyrics that make it clear:
You could be the president, you would get my vote
You could be the captain of whatever floats your boat
You could be the singer, girl, you’d hit ever note
Brilliantly produced and performed.
Yeah, it’s Country but it’s also a happy-song, which is fun to listen to in any format.
