Guess who’s back? It’s the band Cage The Elephant, making their third appearance on Boomer Music Update, last featured in February just off their big Grammy win for Best Rock Album.

In July they issued “Unpeeled,” a collection of live tunes culled from various performances around the country and one of those is in top 10 territory on Alternative radio with a cover of “Whole Wide World,” first recorded 40 years ago by British singer/songwriter Wreckless Eric, praised by Mojo Magazine as the one of the “best punk rock songs of all time.”

Punk? This song could go Pop; it’s frothy and almost fun. Delightful, really, certainly something Boomers would likely enjoy, especially having heard the song 40 years ago.

It’s unlikely that today’s young Cage The
Elephant fans are aware of the song’s history, and even deeper roots, as you can hear when you compare the new version with the old and also hear The Kinks 1970 hit “Lola”—you can draw a direct line between the two songs.
