Last year’s “This Is Me,” from “The Greatest Showman,” was nominated for an Academy Award for “Song Of The Year” and was the year’s #1 selling album (2 million or so), and the creative team that wrote those songs has just released an album of the same songs, but with different singers: The roster includes Kelly Clarkson, Panic At The Disco, Zac Brown Band and a remixed version of “This Is Me” by Keala Settle (who sang it in the film) joined by Kesha and Missy Elliott.
But it’s Pink’s “A Million Dreams” that’s front and center, already top 15 and climbing on the Adult Top 40 chart.
Listening to her interpretation one senses the drama in the music in much the same way as UK singer Limahl did in 1984 on the title song from “Never Ending Story.”
This is the kind of song that never goes “out of style”—big, belting melodies, lyrics with big, hopeful visions sung by artists with big voices and lots of emotion. Songs that resonate with the culture at large, and at the individual level, too.
Kudos: It’s been a while since a movie “theme song” connected enough with the American public to chart as a “hit,” however this year’s Golden Globe winner and Oscar nominee for “Song of the Year, “Shallow,” by Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper, from their blockbuster “Star Is Born,” is a bona fide hit, was Top 10 for weeks, and won a Grammy last night for “Best Pop Duo or Group.”
