Dance Music doesn’t call for inspired lyrics. It just has to make you feel like dancing and the words have to make some sense.
In 1985, British group Dead or Alive had a bona fide, high energy hit with “You Spin Me Round (Like A Record)” which was about what it is like to be a guy in your 20s, lusting after a cute girl. The lyrics don’t make much sense, but that’s OK, the song’s about girls and boys and a good time. Bottom line: she had him walking around in circles.
Today, young men still lust after cute girls, and here’s OMI, claiming the same thing: just thinking about her makes him go around in circles, specifically he’s spinning like a “Hula-Hoop.” OMI sticks with his trademark reggae infused sound. Smooth.
Again, the lyrics are secondary, rather, the sounds of the words and the energy convey what it feels like to be a young man in your 20s lusting after a cute girl.
