Almost all Top 40 and Adult Top 40 radio stations added Sam Smith’s new, emotion packed “To Die For“ on its Valentine’s Day release…it was perfect…as Smith himself explained, “This is for the all the lonely hearts out there on another Valentine’s Day xx.”
Smith’s delivery is sensitive and plaintive; he’s vulnerable, all he wants is to find a woman that he’d love enough that he’d die for her:
I look for you
Every day
Every night
I close my eyes
From the fear
From the light
Just want /somebody to die for
Prince said pretty much the same thing, in 1984’s “I’d Die 4 U,” but his declaration isn’t a plea—its assertive and in your face. He’s not searching, he’s just telling her the way it is:
I’ll never beat you
I’ll never lie
and if you’re evil I’ll forgive you by and by
‘Cause you, I would die for you, yeah
Darling if you want me to
You, I would die for you.
Sam Smith’s “To Die For” is radio rated #24 on Top 40 and #21 on Adult Top 40.
