Chris Cornell is a multi-talented, award wining 51-year old solo artist who was the front man for his own band, Soundgarden, which was a force in the early days of the northwest alternative music scene.
If you are like me, you’ve heard of the group, but never never really heard their music, which, if Chris Cornell is any indication, is my loss, because this is some good stuff.
”Almost Forgot My Broken Heart” is gritty, compelling, hard hitting, a punch in the gut, reminiscent of Rod Stewart at his most raw, as he was with 1977’s ”The First Cut is the Deepest.” Both artists draw emotion from their lyrics and melody in a way that grabs you– you can feel their pain—men torn apart with broken hearts, masculine vulnerability delivered with a testosterone driven intensity. Bottom line, those two songs connect with us, the listener, which is just what art is supposed to do.
Both songs are really long, too, over four minutes each.
For some reason the Chris Cornell video is a mini-movie, a western, even featuring a movie star, Eric Roberts. By contrast, the Rod Stewart clip on youtube is pre-video, attesting to the fact that it comes down to the song, with or without a video.
Not quite a “must listen to” but very good.
