I loved the band before I even heard them because their name is so much fun, and now that I’ve listened to “Spirits,” their newest release, a thought provoking song with a catchy chorus, and most especially since watching their video–a charming, cirque like romp– I think their name fits the band: fun, poppy, quirky, and groovy in a 70s peace, love, and understanding kind of way. Playful, yet thoughtful lyrics, infectious, danceable melodies.
“Spirits,” which has been getting a ton of alternative radio air play, is up-tempo with free verse lyrics best described by the writer and band member Simon Ward–“It’s about finally saying ‘Yeah, I’ve been down, sure there’s darkness but I’m working on making everything better. I’m not afraid anymore.’ I believe that if you look hard enough, even though sometimes it’s way in the distance, there is a ‘bright sun’ and it’s worth searching for.”
“Spirits” brings to mind 1987’s “Beds Are Burning” by Midnight Oil, an Australian group that offered up their own unique production and a message to match. There is a similarity in the sound of both songs.
The Strumbellas are Canadians, as are The Weeknd, Justin Bieber, Shawn Mendes and Allesia Cara, who also had big hits in 2015.
The band is six members: five guys, one woman. They’ve been nominated for major “Juno” awards, the Canadian equivalent of our Grammys.
