UK band “The 1975” has a new single out– “Somebody Else”–and it’s so good we are linking it to Peter Gabriel’s mesmerizing “In Your Eyes” which,, btw, sounds as contemporary, fresh and invigorating today as it did in1981 when it hit #1.

“Somebody Else” has Gabriel’s smooth, world-music sound—a tight arrangement, interesting percussion, very rhythmic. And both songs are about men coping with a broken heart.  A lament from the male point of view:

I don’t want your body

but I hate to think about you with somebody else

our love has gone cold

You’re intertwining your soul with somebody else

RE: How the band got their name: “1 June The 1975” were written on the back of book Jack Kerouac was holding.  It might have been a book he wrote, or perhaps a book written by someone else.

Either way, the original American hipster from the 1950s is inspiring English bands in the 21st century, which is a vivid reminder how far the reach and strong the impact, how mythic, and influential,  American pop culture is, then, and now.

“Somebody Else” is Top 10 on the Alternative chart.

“The 1975” is four young men (late 20s-early 30s) who have been band mates since high school.
