If you like Bryan Ferry and Roxy Music’s “Love is the Drug,” which was a big hit in 1975, than it’s likely that “Dark Necessities,” the newest by the Red Hot Chili Peppers, will appeal to you, too — a polished sound that tantalizes with dense, abstract lyrics supported by a funky bass line.

Even though they been around over 30 years, the Red Hot Chili Peppers still have a bead on what makes a good song, and “Love Necessities” is already a top 5 alternative radio hit, joining much younger groups such as The Strumbellas, Twenty One Pilots and The Lumineers.

Within a few weeks of its release, earlier this month, “Dark Necessities” became one of the most played songs on alternative radio; it’s almost a given that it will reach number one and it stands a good chance of crossing over to pop later this summer.

It’s been five years since the Chili Peppers last album. Their newest “The Getaway” has a release date of June 17th.
