There are love songs and then there are “Country Music” love songs; “Makin’ Me Look Good Again,” by Drake White, is definitely the latter.
He’s a rising star who has been compared to Chris Stapleton, meaning he’s got a “traditional” or even “hard core” Country sound, a la George Jones and Randy Travis.
The soulfulness, sincerity and unique expression of love in White’s latest single comes from someone who has paid their dues—he started writing at 14-years old, and now he’s putting those years of experience on display.
“Makin’ Me Look Good Again” which is currently Top 30 on the Country chart, showcases White’s talents as a songwriter as well as a singer.
It’s not often a retro-sounding, twangy Country ballad makes it into the air-waves and streaming playlists; as it happens “Traditional” and “Hard Core” Country are a favorite genre of mine, so I’m all in with Drake White.
In 1988 (one year before his untimely passing) Keith Whitley was a rising Country singer/ songwriter who also had a gift for emotional honesty and sharing, and his love song, “When You Say Nothing At All” topped the charts that year.
