Here’s Easton Corbin singing “A Girl Like You,” a bright, upbeat expression of good fortune in love that’s already in “top 10” territory on the Country chart.
It’s a safe bet that the late Mel McDaniel influenced this song’s sound, melody and down home approach—when Corbin was in high school, his teen band opened for a Mel McDaniel show, which had to have included his 1984 classic “Baby’s Got Her Blue Jeans On.” No matter that when McDaniel was at his apex, and “Blue Jeans” was #1, Corbin was in diapers.
While both songs are light-hearted and fun, McDaniel’s delivery is aloof, edgy and overtly male, while Corbin’s sound is softer and domesticated, each an insight into the socially acceptable norms of the day: Today men who leer can get sued; back then it was just the way it was.
Corbin busted onto the Country scene in 2010 with hits “A Little More Country Than That” and “Roll With It”– to this day, both are Country radio staples.
