Music has its stereotypes: high drama for opera, young love and lust for rock n’ roll, and poor-but-happy for Country, a concept exemplified in the lovely-to-listen to “We Were Rich”– a brand new up-tempo toe-tapper by female trio Runaway June, it has a throw-back, old-tyme traditional Country sound, and tells a tried and true tale:
We didn’t have it all but we all thought we did
And Mama always said that we were blessed and I believed her
I never thought the grass was greener
On the other side of our old chain link fence
It worked for Johnny Cash…
I remember when I was a lad
times were hard and things were bad
just four people that’s all we were
tryin’ to make a livin’ out of black-land dirt
Runaway June (Jennifer Wayne [granddaughter of John Wayne], Naomi Cooke, and Natalie Stovall) has been around for five years. “We Were Rich” is currently top 50 on the Country chart.
