This week, Dave “Your Duke” Sholin connects Sinead O’Connor’s 1990 mega-hit “Nothing Compares 2 You” to brand-new “Good For You” by Selena Gomez featuring A$AP Rocky.
The similarities: They sound alike: haunting and compelling, the longings of wistful, waifish, provacative young women more entangled with love than having a good time of it. Gomez is 22; Sinead was 24 when she sang “Nothing Compares 2 You.”
Their videos even look alike, lots of really close close-ups of the star’s faces, except that Sinead was growing out a bald head at the time and just had a stubble and Selena has bushels of glossy dark hair, and the long shots show Sinead stalking around in fog, wearing a black, floor length great coat, while Selena rolls around on the couch in torn Levis.
Dave noted that Selena Gomez’s days as a Disney princess are clearly over and he rated this song a “10” on the Hot-o-meter.
