Last week‘s Forbes’ “30 Under 30” top music stars included, not surprisingly, Alessia Cara, a 20-year old Canadian who is also nominated as “Favorite Breakout Artist” on this Sunday nights “Peoples Choice Awards” telecast.
Cara is a serious writer whose work bravely expresses her innermost thoughts in a big, bold voice. Her latest song, “Scars To Your Beautiful,” which currently ranks #3 on the Top 40 chart and #6 on Adult Top 40, deals with how people, women in particular, view themselves physically. It’s powerful on several different levels, both as a rejection of society’s predetermined rules that judge people by their appearance, and it’s also a shout out for individuality and diversity. Her message is clear: we are each beautiful in our own unique way.
And while we are on the topic of beauty, how can we not be reminded of “Beauty Is Only Skin Deep “ by the Temptations, from 1966?
While The Temptations and Cara are very different musically, and have different lyric styles, too, their songs share a fundamental message, one of acceptance, of love not based on how you look but who you are inside.
