Electronic Dance Music aka “EDM” gained attention in the pop music world in 2017 and it’s about to gain even more with super-star Selena Gomez’s latest hit “Wolves,” made in collaboration with top EDM producer, Marshmello. It’s the song she performed on the last week’s American Music Awards.
Radio programmers and listener response has been terrific –“Wolves” propelled right into the top 20 on Top 40 playlists.
Gomez was a one time “Disney Discovery,” a link she shares with 58-year old Baby Boomer Stacey Q, who, as a youngster, performed in numerous Disneyland Christmas events, and had a big hit in1986–pre-EDM days–when she lit up dance floors with “Two Of Hearts,” full of the same energy as “Wolves,” but with her own catchy chorus.
EDM is percussive, originated at raves, clubs, and festivals, and is more popular in Europe than in the U.S. Lyrics aren’t the point –rather, dancing is. The delivery is usually pretty sterile, which plays against the seduction of the relentless beat and the hypnotic repetition, like a hyped up Ravel’s “Bolero.”
