“Two songs sung by strong women with strong statements and forceful melodies.”
If it’s true that pop music reflects the culture, than here’s a vivid example of “my, how things have changed” in the “guys who stray” department.
In 1983, 19-year old Baby Boomer Shannon’s strategy to lure him back was to keep the dancing groove going. You could say that in “Let The Music Play” she sounded a tad desperate.
Today, 36-year old Ingrid Michelson doesn’t put up with no stray: If he’s even thinking of coming back, let her be clear: “Hell No” which is the title of her new single, currently climbing the Adult Top 40 charts.
The accompanying video is especially telling because it flaunts and taunts that imaginary line of the all-important question: is she pretty? In the video, Ms. Michelson, who is lovely and attractive in real life, distorts and contorts her face with paint, and masks, and photo shop, marring her face with grotesque make-up and a swollen nose and snaggy teeth. Is this visual equivalent of “Hell No?”
Both songs are danceable, peppy, catchy, up-tempo, crisp and move along quickly
Ingrid Michelson released her first album 10 years ago; she had her first real hit two years ago with “Girls Chase Boys”
She’s from New York.
