Now 20-years old, New Zealander singer/songwriter Lorde was a superstar at just 17, capturing world attention with “Royals” her debut smash, followed by “Team”, another big hit, and now “Green Light” her newest single, is getting massive airplay on multiple radio formats: Top 40, Adult Top 40 and Alternative.
“Green Light,” which Lorde performed on “Saturday Night Live” last weekend, is clearly more musically upbeat than her earlier productions, which gives you an indication of how dark that work must have been.
This song is about the end of a love affair—all anguish and attitude, Lorde flails her thick, wavy hair around, cries, and pouts – the kinds of things we all did when we were 20 years old and the man or woman we loved left us.
Debbie Harry’s “Heart of Glass” comes to mind–both songs are about the downside of romance, women expressing their shock and loss with catchy lyrics and an echo-y, haunted, sophisticated sound.
“Green Light” is a peek into Lorde’s upcoming 2nd album, “Melodrama,” which is expected to be one the bigger releases this summer, and for which her fans have been waiting for about three years.
BTW, Deborah Harry was in her early 30’s –in 1978 –when Blondie’s disco flavored hit “Heart Of Glass” was being played everywhere.
Some say “Green Light” is the story of Lorde’s growth as a person and as an artist. Reflecting on her time spent in the U.S. –before returning home to New Zealand—and says she’s “kind of figuring out who am I when I’m alone.”
Lorde makes the scene in NYC—she’s one of Taylor Swift’s posse of BFF, and it’s uncanny is how much Debbie Harry looks like Taylor Swift in this video.
