“I Took a Pill in Ibiza” is just out, beginning its climb up the hit parade. In just one listen you can tell that this song–and singer/songwriter Mike Posner– are special: intelligent, clever, creative, fresh, original, and way out of the ordinary.
Six years ago Posner simultaneously graduated from Duke University (w/ a 3.9 average) and also had a Top 10 hit in “Cooler Than Me,” a song as cool as the title. Since then, he’s been mostly writing hits for the likes of Maroon 5, Nick Jonas, Pharrell Williams, Justin Bieber and even Snoop Dogg.
Now he’s headed back in the Top Ten with “I Took a Pill in Ibiza” (true story).
“I took a pill in Ibiza
To show Avicii I was cool
And when I finally got sober I felt 10 years older
But f*** it, it was something to do.”
“Ibiza” brings to mind “Tarzan Boy” (1985) by Baltimora, an Italian band that was a one hit wonder in the U.S. but did very well in Europe.
Both “Ibiza” and “Tarzan Boy” have unique lyric content and some of the vocal notes are similar in both songs, although the rhythmic flow in “Ibiza” is a slower tempo.
“I Took A Pill In Ibiza” might not be the best judgement, but it’s turning into one of the early hits of 2016.
