Listening to 1986’s Ashford and Simpson hit “Solid” –all 6+ minutes of it, was a hoot; the whole “sound” sucked me back into “the 80s” –you might remember that the song was a celebration of their rock solid relationship.
“Closer” by the Chainsmokers, while not polished and tight like “Solid,” has a comparable rhythmic flow, and both are about rock solid relationships except that Ashford and Simpson sound like adults who are in a “serious” relationship and “Closer” sounds like infatuated kids who think they invented love, as we all did when we were that age, and wasn’t it wonderful?
So, baby, pull me closer
In the back seat of your Rover
That I know you can’t afford
Bite that tattoo on your shoulder
Pull the sheets right off the corner
Of that mattress that you stole
From your roommate back in Boulder
We ain’t ever getting older
Featuring an electropop singer named Halsey, “Closer” has reached #1 in SIX countries, including England, Australia and Canada.
In the U.S., it’s jumped into the Top 10 on Top 40 radio, and Adult Top 40 stations are catching up quickly.
The Chainsmokers are two (very successful) NY DJ’s who make records—they had a long run on the charts this summer with a smash called “Don’t Let Me Down” that featured Daya.
We predict that “Closer” will be one the Fall’s biggest Top 40 hits.
