Selena Gomez’s “Bad Liar” brings to mind 1995’s “Hand in Pocket” by Alanis Morissette —similar vocal styles, even though the  “Bad Liar” video is steeped in 70’s era images.

Notably, both are and were very young: Morissette was only 21-years old when “Hand in Pocket” popped.  Gomez is a relatively older 24.

Selena Gomez was a child star who parlayed her Disney career into a brand that includes numerous entertainment platforms i.e. records, concerts, TV, endorsements, and her own clothing line.

Her image is a hyper-yet-subtle sexpot, tastefully seductive with an edge—an image that contrasts with her youthful cuteness.

In my room there’s a king size space

Bigger than it used to be

If you want you can rent that place

Call me an amenity

And

Ooh you’re takin up a fraction of my mind

Ooh every time I watch you serpentine

According to co-writer Justin Tranter, “Bad Liar” is about “trying to hide magical feelings for someone new, but not being able to.”

Whatever.  We Boomers remember our 20s and this song is a good fit for that age group.

Selena Gomez is one of a handful of stars who can have two hits on the music charts at the same time; “Bad Liar” is top 15 on Top 40 radio and “It Ain’t Me”  (with The KYGO) has been in the top 10 for weeks. This puts her in the same league as Lada Gaga and her (Gomez’s) former flame, Justin Bieber.  You may recall they were tabloid favorites.
