“Young Dumb & Broke” by Khalid (prounced Kah-Leed) has over 192 million hits on YouTube.  He’s 19-years old, and he’s from Georgia.

Khalid’s debut album, “American Teen,” is certified platinum and is listed #6 on Rolling Stone magazine’s picks for the Top 50 albums of 2017, plus he scored a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist.

The song had a successful run up the Rhythmic Top 40 chart and has crossed over into mainstream Top 40 radio land.

Khalid is young, but he was born an old soul with a songwriters sensibilities.

We have so much in common
We argue all the time
You always say I’m wrong
I’m pretty sure I’m right
What’s fun about commitment?
When we have our life to live

Yeah, we’re just young dumb and broke
But we still got love to give

The song is  up-tempo, mellow, easy, smooth, reggae tinged with a fun, catchy hook.  Sort of like Ray Charles’ “Busted” from 1963. Gotta love it.

The video is interesting, too.  When we Boomers were in high school it was a different world, and the contrast with today’s high-school environment is eye opening.   (Don’t let the subject matter—high school—keep you from this creative, original song.)
