Though the messages are vastly different, the late Paul Davis’ monster hit from 1978, “I Go Crazy,” featured melodic strains that connect the dots to the emotion of “Youth,” the current single performed by 20-year old Australian singer/songwriter Troye Sivan.

“Youth” is taking off quickly and just entered the Top 30 on the pop music chart.

Even though the title is “Youth,” and the performer a scant 20-years old, neither he nor the song sound “too young”—the lyrics are “adult” and relatable, expressing the exuberance of falling in love, be it at 20 or at 50.

A sample:

Mortal bodies, timeless souls

     cross your fingers,
     here we go

And

And when the lights start flashing like a photo booth
     And the stars exploding
     We’ll be fireproof

You could say that these two songs are two sides of the same coin, i.e. “Youth” is the fizzy falling in love side and “I Go Crazy “is what happens when the love affair is over, and feelings are conflicted.

Both songs are sung by gentle sounding men—like John Denver—not rough like Mick Jagger or Waylon Jennings.

Troye Sivan’s  background:  He not only sings and writes songs, he’s an actor, too, including a role in X-Men Origins: Wolverine
