In 1992, Sophie B. Hawkins, than 28-years old, sang an intense song about deep desire and love’s frustrations –it was gruff, and rough and not very melodic, the lyrics were choppy but her intent was clear, and she was sincere, and “Damn, I Wish I Was Your Lover” was a hit.
Today’s “version” is “Same Old Love,“ currently #3 on the Billboard Top-40 chart, and sung by 23-year old Selena Gomez.
So many similarities between the two women’s style and these songs: the overt sexuality; the attitude and the overheated emotions: control, hurt, anger, frustration.
Both songs cover age-old terrain, the kind that never goes out of style: love/lust/betrayal, but the words get updated. Selena says “that shit, it tears me up” three times, which is even more in-your-face than Sophie B. Hawkins was when she crawled all over the stage, like a lioness on the prowl.
Why It’s Important to Know Who Selena Gomez Is

Her background
Her big break was on the Disney Channel’s “Wizards of Waverly Place.”
