Leon Bridges is silkier than Bill Withers (who has a bit of grit) and his latest top ten hit, “Smooth Sailin’,” is a nod to that bygone era of sensuous, sophisticated, sexy soul hits from the 70s.
“Smooth Sailin’,” like Withers’ “Use Me,” glides along with rhythmic ease and glorious instrumentation. Bridges fans hear whispers of Sam Cooke, or a male version of Amy Winehouse.
All that, plus a slinky saxophone, and a low-key but catchy hook, makes this slick song about a guy looking at a hot lady my first favorite song from 2016.
