In 1982 Toto released the now classic “Africa,” one of their biggest hits.
In 1992, a decade after Africa was #1 on Billboard’s Hot 100, Rivers Cuomo and his band Weezer began their long and successful run as a mainstay on Alternative radio.
And in Dec. 2017, for some reason, a 14-year old Weezer fan began began a Twitter campaign requesting Weezer record a cover of “Africa.”
Weezer obliged, and their “Africa” is currently an enormous success on both Alternative and Adult Top 40 radio.
Other than that both Toto and Weezer are from Los Angeles, we don’t get the connection, but it’s a good story, and a great song….(the original “Africa” has almost 342 million YouTube views.)
