One of my favorite memories of that fateful day was giving John & Yoko a lift to the Record Plant before racing to JFK for my flight back to San Francisco.
John and I connected on our mutual love for Elvis Presley–you can hear that Elvis “quiver” in John’s voice on “Starting Over” and, of course, his famous quote: “Before Elvis there was nothing. Nothing affected me until I heard Elvis. Without Elvis there would be no Beatles.”
While in the car we also talked about the greats of early rock ‘n’ roll who meant so much to each of us…we even sang a few lines from Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis and Elvis hits.
John really lit up during that part of the conversation and I thought, at the time, how cool it would be to one day sit in a room together, and listen to our favorites.
I’ve never forgotten that treasured moment with John Lennon.
*Dave Sholin was the National Music Director for the RKO radio chain, and was in NYC to interview Lennon for a network special.
What a wonderfully touching and evocative event between two giants in their own sphere….
We lost a great one so early
