Yesterday marks 36-years since John Lennon’s shocking and tragic murder.
Luckily, he left a legacy of interviews, the last one, recorded on the afternoon of the day he died, was with BoomerMusicUpdate.com curator Dave Sholin, and that final Lennon interview is included, verbatim, in “Lennon on Lennon,” the latest rock-star bio from Jeff Burger, whose previous works include “Springsteen On Springsteen” and “Cohen On Cohen” –that one’s especially timely in light of Leonard Cohen’s recent death.
Burger‘s painstakingly “Lennon on Lennon” research includes many touching, memorable, even priceless moments, among them an interview from The Tonight Show in May, 1968. Guest hosting that night for Johnny Carson was Joe Garagiola– John Lennon had his band mate at the time, Paul McCartney, with him, and joining them in conversation was an hilarious out-of-it Tallulah Bankhead.
It’s a fascinating read that taps not only into John Lennon’s thoughts and conversation, but is also a nostalgic time capsule of the Baby Boomer generation, with political, social, culture references and cues.
In honor of John Lennon and the music he gifted us, and in the spirit of the season, it’s a safe bet he’d be happy to have Boomers recall and enjoy this Lennon holiday classic.
