50-years ago, March 17th,1968, “The Unicorn” by folk group The Irish Rovers entered the Billboard Top 100.

Written by Shel Silverstein, who also wrote “Cover Of The Rolling Stone” and “Sylvia’s Mother” for Dr. Hook And The Medicine Show,  “The Unicorn” is the perfect song for St. Patrick’s Day revelry as it practically screams green, shamrocks, four leaf clovers and leaping leprechaun

“The Unicorn” is a corny, lighthearted, fantasy folk song that eventually made it to the Top 10 on the Pop chart at a time when most of us lived a pretty local life with a limited world view and there was room on the cultural bandwidth for a carefree novelty song to capture the public’s fancy, vs. today’s digital, global world with more serious issues to sing about.

Saving the best for last:  Glen Campbell plays lead guitar on “The Unicorn,” and that’s reason enough a raise a glass of green colored Irish coffee and sing along.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day, the one day where everyone is a little bit Irish.
