Sunday, Father’s Day, is officially the first day of summer, and, for sure, it’s not going to be like any summer any of us have ever had before.
Fifty years ago, “In the Summertime,” by Mungo Jerry, was the #1 song in the U.K.; over here, the top slot was “The Long and Winding Road,” by the Beatles.
Here’s what we were listening to, Summer, 1970, when the oldest Boomer was 24 y/o and the youngest was 6.
#2 Love You Save – Jackson 5
#3 Which Way You Goin’ Billy? – The Poppy Family
#4 Get Ready – Rare Earth
#5 Mama Told Me (Not To Come) – Three Dog Night
#6 Ball Of Confusion – The Temptations
#7 Love On A Two-Way Street – The Moments
#8 The Letter – Joe Cocker
#9 Hitchin’ A Ride – Vanity Fare
#10 Lay Down (Candles In The Rain) – Melanie
as Bill Drake might have said “50 years ago, today”
Ralph..no doubt followed a big thunderclap of audio!
What about the The ultimate make-out song of the summer by Burt Bacharach single Close To You by The Carpenters?
It was No 1 for four weeks in the summer and overall no 2 for the year on Billboard.
Another of Carpenters was We’ve Only Just Begun. Beautiful song.
Hi..thanks for reminding us of “Close To You”..yes a huge number one hit that summer. But this list comprises the Top Ten of just THIS week (6/20/70) “Close To You” did not hit number until late July.
