Memphis is in the midst of their annual “Elvis Week,” when thousands of fans make a pilgrimage to Graceland, Elvis’s Memphis mansion, in anticipation of August 16th, the date “The King” died, 1977, when he was 42 y/o.
Among the events will be a Monday appearance by Priscilla Presley for “Elvis In Concert”, on screen performances backed by a live band including TCB band members James Burton and Glen Hardin. Wrapping up the week on Tuesday is “Conversations On Elvis” that includes Priscilla and others who were close to Elvis.
BoomerMusicUpdate curator Dave Sholin on Presley: “He changed the culture, he changed the world and influenced generations of musicians. As John Lennon said about the King, ‘we went from black & white to color.’ There will never be another phenomenon like him again.”
As always, Duke, your Elvis compendium of video works wonderfully lyrically with the old Lonnie Mack/Johnny Rivers/Chuck Berry and the million others who did Memphis!
Every time I think of Elvis, though, I seem to go back to those late ’60’s, early ’70s fabulous arrangements on “Kentucky Rain,” “You Don’t Have to Say You Love Me,” “The Wonder of You” et al…I think of that period as his “Last Hurrah”–dramatic tunes that let the King get loose and over-the-top….GENIUS
That’s why you ARE the GENIUS! Thanks for reaching out. Totally appreciate you passing along your thoughts on this post and any others. Love those titles you mention.
