For Boomers who have an affinity for those smooth R&B classics we listened to back in the day, current Top 40 hit ”Redbone” is a dead ringer.

Performed by multi-talented Donald Glover, whose stage name is ‘Childish Gambino,’  “Redbone” brings to mind the whole ooohh baby baby that is so 70s, like 1971’s  “I Love You For All Seasons” the one and only hit by a group called The Fuzz.  Both songs, old and new, have  the same sound, mood and style.   Ooohh baby baby.

To put this in perspective, today’s high schoolers listening to a 70’s R&B groove  would be the equivalent of us Boomers, when we were in high school, listening to songs from 1920s, which was not ever going to happen. We were listening to Elvis, the Beatles, the Doors, Elton John, John Denver.

I point this out because it’s confirmation that when it comes to music, “Boomers Rule” –for the past 50 years, no generation has topped the quality and quantity, width and depth, and multi-generational impact that the collective Boomer music library has had.

Back to Childish Gambino:  He 33-years old, born in CA, raised in GA; graduated from New York University and the DeKalb School of the Arts.

Gambino  writes and sings, is a DJ known as mcDJ;  he’s a comedian, director, producer, and rapper.

He was nominated for  two Grammies in 2015.  Disney is remaking “The Lion King” and Gambino will voice Simba.

“Redbone” was included in the soundtrack of last Spring’s hit movie “Get Out” during the opening credits.
