Bill withers had a short recording career–just 15 years–from 1970-85, yet in that window, his songs secured him a permanent place in the collective musical soundtrack of a generation.
Everybody knows “Ain’t No Sunshine,” ” Lean on Me (his biggest hit, which topped both the R&B and Pop charts in 1972) and “Just the Two of Us.”
Withers won three Grammys and was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. As he himself said, “I don’t think I’ve done bad for a guy from Slab Fork, West Virginia.”
Withers was 81 when he passed away March 30, due to heart problems.
Thanks for recognizing Bill Withers’ contributions. His heartfelt songs have always been an inspiration to me. BTW, José James released a tribute album to Bill called “ Lean on Me” on Blue Note back in 2018. Had a chance to see him do the songs live and he was terrific.
