Bill withers had a short recording career–just 15 years–from 1970-85, yet in that window, his songs secured him a permanent place in the collective musical soundtrack of a generation.

Everybody knows “Ain’t No Sunshine,” ” Lean on Me (his biggest hit, which topped both the R&B and Pop charts in 1972) and “Just  the Two of Us.”

Withers won three Grammys and was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.  As he himself said, “I don’t think I’ve done bad for a guy from Slab Fork, West Virginia.”

Withers was 81 when he passed away March 30,  due to heart problems.
